A Piwik PRO alternative now that the free plan is gone

Piwik PRO retired its free Core plan in February 2026. Its entry price is now 36 € a month, and its analytics sets first-party cookies unless you switch it to an anonymous mode. If you were on Core for a small site, the question is no longer which is better — it is what you do next.

Piwik PRO figures read on its pricing and help pages, September 2026.

In short: Piwik PRO is an enterprise compliance suite — consent manager, tag manager, customer data platform, a choice of data centre written into the contract, HIPAA, on-premises. If your buying decision goes through a legal department, it is a serious answer and Kipstats is not. If you are a business that wants to know why its checkout leaks, 36 € a month for cookies-by-default and API-only raw data is a lot of machinery.

What changed, and what it costs you

1. The free plan ended

Piwik PRO announced its new pricing in August 2025 and moved Core users to Business; its own community forum states the free Core plan was discontinued in February 2026. What remains is a 30-day trial, after which an account that does not upgrade is deleted with its data seven days later. Kipstats keeps a free plan for one site and 10,000 pageviews a month, with every feature in it.

2. Cookies by default

Piwik PRO sets first-party cookies out of the box — a visitor ID for 13 months, a session cookie for 30 minutes, a consent cookie for 12 months. It ships a consent manager precisely because it needs one, and it offers anonymous modes you can enable. Kipstats has no cookie to turn off: a visitor is an anonymous daily fingerprint, and the IP address is never stored.

3. Your raw data, and how you get it out

On Business, raw data access is API-only — the CSV, BigQuery, S3 and SFTP exports belong to Enterprise or to paid add-ons. Kipstats gives every plan a REST API with an OpenAPI spec and a CSV export, including the free one. See the API reference.

What Piwik PRO does better

Almost everything a regulated organisation asks for: a consent manager, a tag manager, customer data activation, 25 months of retention, a contractual choice of data centre (Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, the US and more), private cloud, HIPAA and on-premises deployments. Kipstats has none of that, and is not trying to.

Which one is for you

Pick Kipstats if…

  • You were on the free Core plan and 36 € a month is not proportionate to your site.
  • You want no cookie at all, rather than a cookie you configure away.
  • You want to see friction — rage clicks, abandoned fields — not only compliance-grade counts.
  • You want the API and CSV export without an add-on.

Stay on Piwik PRO if…

  • Your legal or security team requires a DPA with a named data centre, HIPAA or on-premises.
  • You need a consent manager and a tag manager from the same vendor.
  • You run customer data activation and audience exports.
  • You need 25 months of retention contractually guaranteed.

Questions

Is Piwik PRO still free?

No. The free Core plan was discontinued in February 2026; what remains is a 30-day trial and plans starting at 36 € a month. Accounts that do not upgrade are deleted with their data seven days after the trial.

Does Piwik PRO need a cookie banner?

By default it sets first-party cookies, which is why it ships a consent manager. It also offers anonymous modes that reduce or remove that. Kipstats never sets one, so the question does not arise for it.

Can Kipstats replace a consent manager?

No, and it should not pretend to. Kipstats itself needs no consent, but if you run other scripts that do, you still need a consent tool.

What about migrating history?

There is no import today. Run both in parallel for a few weeks, or export from Piwik PRO and keep the file — your Kipstats history starts on the day you install the script.

Coming from the old free Core plan?

One site and 10,000 pageviews a month, free, with friction detection and the API included.
